Free Mammograms Offered for Low-Income Women

Free mammography screenings will be offered to low-income women 40 and older Friday at Crystal Stairs, a child-care research organization based in Ladera Heights.
Crystal Stairs has teamed with Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center to offer the tests. One in eight women over 35 are affected by breast cancer, and early detection can result in a 95% survival rate when tumors are found in the noninvasive stage, organizers said.
“The neat thing about this project is that women who happen to be found to have breast cancer are given the full treatment [at Queen of Angels] for free,” said Eduardo Gonzalez of Crystal Stairs.
The idea for the free mammography screenings came six months ago at a health fair sponsored by Crystal Stairs to which the medical center brought its mobile cancer screening program.
The Friday screenings will be done at 5105 W. Goldleaf Circle from noon to 8 p.m. For an appointment, call (213) 299-8998.
