A Ball State First for Wells

Forward Bonzi Wells scored 33 points and had six rebounds as Ball State (7-1) defeated a Big Ten team for the first time since 1989 with a 68-56 victory over Wisconsin (4-5) at Muncie, Ind.

Wells, who made 14 of 24 shots, became the first Ball State player to get 2,000 points and 700 rebounds in a career. Ray McCallum is Ball State’s only other 2,000-point scorer, getting 2,109 points from 1979-83.

Boise State, playing without two suspended starters, was a 79-72 winner over Washington State at Boise, Idaho.

Boise State (6-1) was without guard Gerry Washington and forward Kejuan Woods, who were suspended for one game for fighting in Wednesday’s game with Idaho State.

Forward Roberto Bergersen had 24 points for Boise State, while forward Kojo Mensah-Bonsu had 21 points for Washington State (5-3).

Freshman guard Marcus Moody scored 39 points, including the game-winning basket with 4.1 seconds left, as Memphis (3-1) was a 80-78 winner over Oklahoma (5-4) at Norman, Okla. Moody, who scored Memphis’ first 14 points, had scored 39 points total in his first three games. He made 13 of 22 shots, including seven of 14 from three-point range. . . . Senior forward DeWaune Wesley scored a career-high 33 points and had 14 rebounds as New Orleans (1-1) was a 77-64 winner over Villanova (2-4) in Philadelphia. Wesley, a Philadelphia native who regained academic eligibility on Friday, made 13 of 18 shots.

Indiana (6-3) staged a second-half comeback to defeat South Alabama, 64-56, at Bloomington, Ind., and win the Indiana Classic for the 24th time in as many years. . . . Sacramento State (1-8) ended a losing streak at 14 games that dated to last season with a 73-70 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Texas Christian (9-0) got 22 points each from guards Prince Fowler, Mike Jones and Malcolm Johnson in a 99-75 victory over former Southwestern Conference rival Baylor (4-4) in the TCU Invitational championship game at Fort Worth, Texas. . . . Syracuse (7-0) held Miami of Ohio (6-2) to its lowest point total of the season in a 72-53 victory in the championship game of the Carrier Classic at Syracuse, N.Y. Miami of Ohio’s leading scorer Wally Szczberiak, who came in averaging 28.7 points a game, was held to 16 points on six-of-18 shooting.
