Skateboard Park Land Sought

After losing another potential skateboard park to angry neighbors, local youths are looking to Uncle Sam for a replacement site.
City officials say they are on a fast track toward acquiring about 4 acres of low-cost or free land on two federally owned lots on Alicia Parkway near the Chet Holifield Federal Building.
By next month, the vacant lots are expected to be declared surplus property by the General Services Administration. Once that happens, the land must be offered to other federal agencies and homeless groups, a process expected to take about six months.
City Manager Tim Casey said real estate analysts have told him it is unlikely other federal agencies would pursue the lots. But he added: “I want to avoid being too enthusiastic because we don’t own the property.”
The land, off a well-traveled street and well away from homes, would make a “good site” for a skating park, Casey said.
The City Council last week, facing vehement opposition from neighbors, put off a proposal for a skating center at Chapparosa Park.
