Souter Clears Way for Alerts on Sex Offenders
TRENTON, N.J. — A U.S. Supreme Court justice Monday cleared the way for New Jersey to notify communities of the whereabouts of sex offenders.
Justice David H. Souter in Washington turned down a request by lawyers representing sex offenders and the state public defender’s office to keep a court order in place barring community notification.
The U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia ruled, 2 to 1, in August that the law was constitutional, a ruling opponents appealed in November. The Supreme Court has not yet said whether it will hear the appeal.
