Hate Radio
Jim Mann’s column opposing radio jamming of foreign hate radio (“U.N. Hate-Radio Jamming Would Send Wrong Signal,†Dec. 3) made some very good points.
However, I’d like to address any misimpression regarding my quote. My general position is to oppose jamming of radio broadcasts. I believe that the truth eventually prevails in the battle of ideas and that even odious views deserve a hearing.
However, in extreme circumstances, as when foreign radio is being effectively used as a weapon to incite genocide (as was done in Rwanda) and when there is little countering broadcast information, then I would cautiously support efforts to suppress such broadcasts. These efforts should be done by the United States, not by the U.N.
Mann and I agree that the ideal way to beat murderous propaganda is to overwhelm it with accurate, unbiased information. That is why I am exploring the possibilities of a Radio Free Africa.
