The two fashion accessories undeniably necessary for spending any time outdoors at the Getty are big hats and even bigger sunglasses because, frankly, 73,750,000 pounds of marble make for the world’s largest tanning bed. It’s bright up there--be prepared.

* Be ready to walk. A lot. The center is big--110 acres. Public areas include the 360,000-square-foot museum with its five two-story gallery pavilions (that’s at least twice as much exhibition space as the Getty Villa in Malibu), the Research Institute and acres of gardens, both unexpected and formal. Wear casual clothes and extremely comfortable shoes. (Unless you like clicking pumps across all that stone.)
