Colorado State Routs Nevada, 45-13
Colorado State opened its season with its seventh-best offensive output ever--577 yards--in routing Nevada, 45-13, Saturday in a nonconference game at Fort Collins, Colo.
Damon Washington and Kevin McDougal combined for 315 yards rushing and four touchdowns and Moses Moreno threw for 245 yards to lead the Rams, who are favored to win the Western Athletic Conference.
Colorado State also turned in an impressive defensive effort against Nevada, the favorite in the Big West Conference.
The Wolf Pack led the nation in total offense the last two seasons and averaged 527 yards per game last year. But the Wolf Pack managed just 257 yards.
A crowd of 29,672 was the largest opening-day crowd in Hughes Stadium history.
Air Force 14, Idaho 10--With two touchdowns, Spanky Gilliam gave Air Force all the scoring it needed as the Falcon defense excelled at Air Force Academy, Colo.
Gilliam, a 5-foot-9, 217-pound fullback, scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter and a two-yard run in the third as the Falcons of the WAC beat the Vandals of the Big West.
Hawaii 17, Minnesota 3--Defensive back Eddie Klaneski returned a punt 15 yards to set up one touchdown and Chris Shinnick returned a fumble two yards for another at Honolulu as the Rainbows spoiled Glen Mason’s debut as coach of the Golden Gophers.
Fresno State 35, Portland State 7--Joe Turner, inserted into the starting lineup just prior to the game, carried 10 times for 120 yards and a touchdown at Fresno to lead the Bulldogs in their season opener.
Turner started in place of Michael Pittman, the team’s top returning rusher, who was suspended indefinitely for actions detrimental to the team.
Utah State 21, Utah 14--Utah State’s Matt Sauk ran for two touchdowns and Demario Brown rushed for 153 yards in 36 carries as the Aggies won at Salt Lake City.
Sauk was 19-of-30 passing for 212 yards without an interception.
New Mexico 33, Northern Arizona 10--New Mexico’s defense came up with four interceptions and tailback Lennox Gordon came up with two crucial runs late in the third quarter as the Lobos won at Albuquerque, N.M. Gordon finished with 110 yards in 19 carries.
The four interceptions was the most since New Mexico had five against San Diego State in 1991.
