Cathleen Cordell; Stage, Screen Actress
Cathleen Cordell, actress on the British and Broadway stage as well as in films and television, has died. She was 82.
Cordell died Aug. 19 in Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of emphysema, said her longtime friend and colleague Elliott Reid.
Although she began her career in New York, Cordell spent World War II acting in England. There she worked for the BBC, appeared on stage in such plays as “Design for Living” and “Arms and the Man,” and made her film debut in the British version of “Gaslight” (later remade by MGM starring Ingrid Bergman).
Cordell was also in the British film “Major Barbara” starring Rex Harrison.
Returning to the United States after the war, Cordell appeared in radio soap operas, on Broadway and in more films, including “Return of the Living Dead,” “MASH” and “Airport.”
She also became a familiar face on television, with guest roles on such popular series as “Ironside,” “Perry Mason,” “Batman,” “Route 66,” “Marcus Welby, M.D.” “Cannon,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Wagon Train,” “My Three Sons,” “My Favorite Martian,” “Dragnet” and “I Dream of Jeannie.”
A memorial Mass is scheduled for 7 p.m. today at Blessed Sacrament Church, 6657 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles.
