‘La Haine (Hate)’
Mathieu Kassovitz’s 1996 film opens with footage of a riot in one of Paris’ suburban housing projects that’s been sparked by the severe beating by police of an Arab youth, He then introduces us to three young men who are his friends: Vinz (Vincent Cassel, pictured), a Jew; Hubert (Hubert Kounde), a black; and Said, an Arab; and the film follows them throughout a restless, aimless day and night after they’ve learned that their friend is in the hospital and might not survive (TMC early Thursday at 2:20 a.m.).
