Ascending Women
It was impressive to see that the list of nine people “shaping the post-Cold War world” included a Muslim woman, Fatima Mernissi, as someone to watch in the coming years (“Nine Lives,” by Robin Wright, June 29). Mernissi’s recognition in the magazine lends credibility to her quest to enlighten others about the interpretation of Islam as it pertains to women.
As Americans, we have a lot to learn from the developing countries about female parliamentary representation. I must commend Wright for her insight into the emerging roles of the Muslim women who are attempting to change the status quo.
