Lewis Shows What He Can Do
While Jermaine Lewis ran nine times for 91 yards in a 90-play scrimmage Saturday, Skip Hicks and Keith Brown watched from the sideline.
Hicks and Brown were listed among the “we know what they can do” group at UCLA by Coach Bob Toledo, who instead had Lewis and Durell Price running the football with the first team on two touchdown drives against the third-string defense.
The same is true of quarterback Cade McNown, who completed five of nine passes for 93 yards, 24 of them on a hookup with Jim McElroy for the scrimmage’s first touchdown, after runs of 23 and 13 yards by Lewis. Price scored the other touchdown on a 17-yard run.
Backup quarterback Drew Bennett, a redshirt freshman walk-on, completed 15 of 23 passes for 123 yards and had 10 completions in a row.

Toledo said that freshman quarterback Scott McEwan of Thousand Oaks has asked to redshirt, so another freshman, Ed Stansbury of El Paso, will be the third-string quarterback and travel all season. But Toledo also said he hopes Stansbury can be redshirted. . . . Freshman linebacker Tony White, also from El Paso, impressed and is being given a chance to play this season.
