Searchers Find 5 More Bodies of Arizona Hikers
PAGE, Ariz. — Crews searching a floating, unstable tangle of debris at the mouth of Antelope Canyon on Friday found five more bodies of hikers swept away in a flash flood, raising the number of confirmed dead to eight.
Three others were missing and presumed dead after a wall of water swept away a dozen hikers Tuesday as they explored a narrow section of the sandstone canyon that’s a magnet for tourists. One hiker survived.
The latest bodies were found Friday morning in the muck at the canyon mouth, said Chief Deputy Sam Whitted of the Coconino County Sheriff’s Department.
Two other bodies were found Thursday in the debris and one was found earlier back in the canyon.
Crews perched on plywood sheets as they picked through the debris with poles and rakes. Scuba divers searched Lake Powell beyond the debris field.
Seven French citizens, two U.S. residents, a Briton and a Swede are thought to have died in the flood.
