Engineers Should Guide OCTA Plans
Re “No Mass Transit System Can Defy Society’s Trends,” editorial, Aug. 2:
The Orange County Transportation Authority’s transportation planning process is dominated by visionary social science rather than deductive engineering science.
A “balanced multi-modalism” chant has replaced logical reasoning, arguing for anything but roads because we already have lots of them. Visionary but thoughtless slogans prevail.
For example, OCTA’s latest $4-million investment study on a “balanced transportation vision” recommends a “balanced multi-modal” transportation network. But the growing Orange County traffic congestion problem will not be solved by visionaries chasing balanced multi-modal illusions.
The OCTA Board of Directors must take transportation planning out of the hands of visionary social scientists. Transportation planning must be returned to engineers who are functionally equipped to plan, design and build a cost-effective transportation system.
