Literacy Project Gives 10,000 Books to Schools
More than 1,200 students from 38 schools gathered on the playground of 49th Street Elementary School on Friday as a national literacy program donated 10,000 books to area schools.
The donation by Rolling Readers USA came during a celebration of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s summer reading program.
The program included actor Ed Asner reading from a book with a theme that “if you plant one sunflower, you’ll soon have sunflowers all over the place,” said Principal Lem Chavis. Youngsters were also treated to a puppet show based on “Cinderella.”
“This has been a great reading program,” said Chavis, whose 49th Street library will receive 200 books. “Now my children can read better.”
