Parade to Highlight India’s Independence Day Festival
A celebration of the 50th anniversary of India’s independence is expected to attract thousands of people to the Little India area of Artesia today.
Starting at 10 a.m. with a health fair at Artesia Park, 18747 Clarkdale Ave., the festival is to include a two-hour parade featuring floats built by the event’s sponsor, the Federation of Indo-American Assns. of Southern California. The procession will run along Pioneer Boulevard starting at Artesia Boulevard at 1 p.m. and end at the park.
A cultural program at the park is scheduled for 4 to 10:30 p.m., with performances by Los Angeles-based singers Charanjeep and Jayshree Gohind. Fashion shows and a traditional Shaheed drama are part of the bill.
Organizers have also arranged an essay contest for children, as well as dozens of food booths serving traditional dishes such as tandoori chicken and samosas. Cricket matches are also planned at the park.
