Lack of Interest Stops Night High School
Plans to open Orange County’s only night high school next month are on hold indefinitely because the idea failed to attract enough students, Capistrano Unified School District officials said Friday.
Just over 50 students have expressed strong interest in the proposed Capistrano Night High School, which would have been held on the Capistrano Valley High School campus in Mission Viejo, said Rich Johnson, executive director for alternative education.
The number has dwindled, Johnson said, from the 160 students last month who said they were interested in night school.
Night school for grades 10 through 12 was meant in part to offer educational alternatives to students and in part to ease crowding on regular campuses.
About 2,800 students are expected to enroll in grades nine through 12 at Capistrano Valley when the fall term starts, on Sept. 8.
Supt. James A. Fleming said officials are studying other opportunities for students who want alternatives to traditional daytime classes, including independent study and what he called a “cyberspace high school.”
