One Night Stand
The Merbau collection by Donghia is the perfect bedside companion for those wanting casual occasional tables with an elegant silhouette.
The night stands and occasional table will also work in a hall or other rooms as accent pieces. With the addition of shelves or drawers, they offer storage for a favorite book and other accouterments.
Distinguished by blond wicker and the teak-like wood native to Indonesia that lends the collection its name, each Merbau piece is handcrafted in a village on the island of Sulawesi.
The drawer pulls, corner accents and table legs are made of the same wood for added strength.
The collection has two night stands--one with one drawer ($1,084) and one with two drawers ($1,417)--and an occasional table ($500). The tables are only part of a full line that includes a seating group and beds.
Donghia’s showroom is at the Pacific Design Center, 8687 Melrose Ave., in Los Angeles. (310) 657-6060.
Square One
Geometrics take Calvin Klein’s home collection to another plane. Lines and deep, rich color give his offerings for fall 1997 a fresh angle.
For the bed, the midnight blue percale sheeting ($75 for a queen flat sheet, 100% cotton) is offset by a delicate floral outline in a lighter shade of blue. The duvet, which has a Japanese ladder print in a lighter shade of blue, completes the clean, luxurious look.
For added warmth and texture in the bedroom, Klein offers accessories such as pillows ($75 and up) and throws ($160 and up), in silk organza, brushed boucle, sueded fleece and Shantung.
Klein’s fall collection will be in stores in September. For the nearest retailer, call (800) 294-7978.
Food for Thought
Have a little verse with your veggies when you carry your vittles in the lunch box by Magnetic Poetry.
The galvanized steel box comes with an assortment of 200 food and lunch-oriented words--such as milk, cake, soup and picnic--that can be arranged in any fashion inside or outside box.
The lunch box, which has a retro feel, is sturdy and can take a beating. The words are simple enough that a 7-year-old can put together some great works.
Protective plastic sleeves are included, in case you create a masterpiece and you don’t want your juice box to get all over it.
The lunch box ($25) is the latest product of Minneapolis-based Magnetic Poetry, a line of literary materials such as giant-word kits, foreign-language kits and an interactive screen saver. Some of the products are featured in the current motion-picture release “Conspiracy Theory,” starring Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts.
