Cooler Ko Samui
It was with mixed emotions that we read your interesting article on Ko Samui, Thailand (“Kool Ko,” July 20).
In 1983 we had a leisurely three-month safari around the world. Before our departure, I just happened to read about Ko Samui and decided that this would have a major priority in our plans.
How heartbreaking that our favorite place has become a popular tourist magnet! We are part of the few lucky ones who experienced a true paradise.
We rented a one-room, thatched-roof cottage at the Golden Beach resort. We stepped out our front door to the white sand beach, framed with coconut palms, leading to the Gulf of Thailand. We shared the beach with one other couple.
We stayed two weeks, and our total expenses amounted to $52. Meals were on the honor system. Breakfast consisted of a delicious, fresh fruit plate, coffee and toast. For dinner, the owner of the resort and his wife cooked the fish they had just caught in the gulf. Several days we hired the local “taxi” (a pickup truck with boards across the back) and went swimming in a large pond fed by a lovely waterfall.
There really wasn’t much to do except “escape from reality.” But what a wonderful way to relax and get recharged! Will we ever find another “Ko Samui”? I doubt it!
