Clinton Signs Budget Bill

* The geniuses in Washington have finally balanced the federal budget! The next time that our family budget threatens to get out of balance, we will just follow the example they have set for us:

* Reduce our income (tax cuts).

* Increase our spending (new entitlement programs).

* Promise to make expenses equal income (in five years).

* Put off until the future planning for our old age and arranging medical care we can afford (Social Security and Medicare).

* Ignore the possibility of paying off our debt (national debt).

* If supply exceeds demand we have deflation. If demand exceeds supply we have inflation. If taxes are cut we increase demand. Today, supply and demand are remarkably well balanced and we have an economy that everybody hails as the greatest ever. I hope we don’t regret this “remember me on election day” tax cut.

* The balanced budget produces no dancing in the streets for the aged, the children and the poor of this nation. The balanced budget reminds me of Baas Cogez, the rich miller in the story, “A Dog of Flanders.” The dog and his master died together because Baas was just like the president, the Senate and the House, callous and sinful, who will be cursed into their graves for what they have done.

* Congress has postponed a balanced budget for four more years. The federal government deficit has dropped from $300 billion a few years ago to $100 billion last year and $37 billion in the current year. It was clear to Congress and the president that they had to do something or fiscal year 1998 would show a surplus. Congress acted. They cut taxes. Now we are assured that deficits will continue for four more years.
