Dolphins Need Safety of Cove
* Dolphin expert Dennis Kelly feels that the $23-million redevelopment project at Crystal Cove State Park will endanger the breeding ground for bottlenose dolphins (July 25).
Kelly has observed the birthing ritual of the dolphins and feels the cove between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach is a “safe haven” for them. This area is the only place in Orange County where this occurs. The redevelopment project would allow greater public access to the cove and would potentially disrupt the dolphin birthing grounds.
I think the redevelopment project should be stopped until more study can be done on this issue. If the project were to continue and it would disrupt the birthing ritual of the bottlenose dolphin, this could potentially diminish the population of dolphins. It is much easier to save a species now than to try to bring it back from the brink of extinction. Man can be very destructive, as in the case of the decrease of the world’s rain forests that is going on today.
Man is not the only creature on this earth. He needs to be respectful of all creatures that are sharing this space with him. More study needs to be done on this issue before the redevelopment project goes forth. Take the time to do this now!
