DAY OF REMEMBRANCE: Congregation Beth Knesset Bamidbar will hold Tisha B’Av services at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Tisha B’Av, meaning “the 9th of Av,” in Hebrew, commemorates the day of destruction of the Jerusalem Temple, first by the Babylonians in 586 BC, and then by the Romans in AD 70. The day also recalls an edict by King Edward I expelling the Jews of England in 1290, and the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. The temple is at 1611 East Ave. J, Lancaster. FASHION FROM THE ‘40s: The West Valley Christian Women’s Club will hold a special luncheon and fashion show titled “A Look Back at Fashion,” with styles from the ‘40s, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Calabasas Inn, 23500 Park Sorrento Drive, Calabasas. OPEN HOUSE FOR KIDS: Shomrei Torah Synagogue will hold an open house and “Fun Day” for children and their parents at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the temple, 7353 Valley Circle Blvd., West Hills. CENTENARIAN HONORED: Bertha Haft Kurz will celebrate her 100th birthday at the senior adults social at Temple Beth Solomon of the Deaf. Born in New York City, Kurz attended the Lexington School for the Deaf in Manhattan, where she met her husband, Harry Kurz, and also learned diamond cutting. She graduated from the school in 1913 and worked at that trade until World War I. Kurz, who is active in the temple’s sisterhood events, has been a member of Temple Beth Solomon for four years. The celebration will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the temple, 13580 Osborne St., Arleta.
CHURCH TO CELEBRATE: Woodland Hills Community Church will celebrate its 50th anniversary as a congregation at 11 a.m. Aug. 17 at the church, 21338 Dumetz Road, Woodland Hills. Brunch will feature a slide presentation on the history of the congregation, which was established Aug. 13, 1947. Information: (818) 346-0820.
