Sign Welcoming Visitors to City’s Downtown OKd
Visitors to Fullerton soon will be greeted by a new sign.
After months of creative differences, the City Council this week agreed on a simple slogan to be painted on an abandoned railroad bridge over Harbor Boulevard: “Welcome to Downtown Fullerton.”
The message, in capital letters, will face motorists traveling north on Harbor Boulevard. It will be illuminated with lights at night.
Officials and residents had debated at length what the sign should say and how it should be displayed.
Should it read “Welcome to Downtown Fullerton” or just “Welcome to Fullerton”? Should it be a mural, depicting city scenes, or have a boxcar-like theme in tribute to Fullerton’s railroading heritage?
Council members, citing cost concerns, finally agreed on a simple design by local artist Anthony J. Trasport.
Officials now are seeking an artist to paint the words on the overpass.
Councilwoman Jan M. Flory said the sign will introduce visitors to the downtown business district, which the city has been aggressively promoting. It will “enhance the downtown area,” she said.
