Historical Society Raising Funds to Restore Craftsman House

The Redondo Beach Historical Society is trying to raise $50,000 to restore the Morrell House, one of the city’s last California Craftsman-style homes with a wraparound porch.

The Morrell House was originally located at Catalina and Diamond Avenues, but was moved to Heritage Court in Dominguez Park, where the city’s historical museum is based.

The Historical Society plans to decorate the home, which once belonged to the Morrell family, who settled in the city around 1906, with furnishings that reflect each decade of the 20th century.

The society also will give the two-story home, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991, a new coat of paint--white with black trim--and a seismic overhaul. The floors will also be refurbished.

The organization, which has already raised $60,000 for the restoration, hopes to have the project completed by 1999.
