Montevideo, Si!

I am writing in response to Joseph Field’s letter “Mugged in Montevideo” (March 30) about his experience in Montevideo, Uruguay. I lived in Montevideo for five years (1990-95) and never had any problem being out at any time day or night.
Being cautious is a must anywhere you are, especially if you are a foreigner and do not know what is going on. Walking around with a lot of money in your pockets or with your camera around your neck is not a good idea anywhere.
Montevideo is a wonderful city full of amazing sites and wonderful people (the beaches are incredible). I discourage anyone from believing that a country is negative based on the bad experience of one person.
