17,780 Watch Liberty Win Again, 65-57
The New York Liberty remained the only unbeaten team in the WNBA with a 65-57 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday.
It was the first home game for the Liberty (4-0) and drew a crowd of 17,780 to Madison Square Garden, the largest to watch a women’s professional game in North America. The previous record of 16,285 was set Tuesday when Phoenix played at Houston.
San Jose’s Jennifer Gillom, who had 20 of her 23 points in the second half, led all scorers. The Mercury (2-2) never led.
Charlotte 67, Cleveland 44--The Sting, playing its first game at Charlotte Coliseum before a crowd of 7,289, became the last WNBA team to earn its first victory.
Andrea Stinson had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Sting (1-3). Isabelle Fijalkowski led the Rockers (1-3) with 15 points.
