Yelsey Advances to Championship of Tournament
FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Second-seeded Anne Yelsey of Corona del Mar defeated third-seeded Lindsey Nelson of Orange, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the finals of the girls’ 12 singles Saturday in the Southern California Junior Sectionals at the Los Caballeros Sports Village.
Yelsey will face top-seeded Dianne Matias in the final. Matias advanced with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 win over Judith De Vera.
The hopes for an all-county final in the girls’ 18 event came to an end as Faye De Vera of Cypress and Katey Becker of Orange lost their semifinal matches.
De Vera lost to Allison Bradshaw from San Diego, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 and Becker lost, 6-3, 6-1 by Escondido’s Abigail Spears.
In the girls’ 14 event: Arpi Kojian of Santa Ana was lost to top-seeded Amber Liu of La Mesa, 6-2, 7-6.
On the boys’ side, Irvine’s David Lingman lost to third-seeded Nicholas Weiss, 6-3, 7-6 in a boys’ 16 singles semifinal match and top-seeded Drew Hoskins Rossmoor was knocked out in the semifinals of the boys’ 14 by unseeded Travis Kinard of Pasadena, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.
In the boys’ 10 final, third-seeded Lawrence Wang of Anaheim was defeated by top-seeded Stefan McKinney of Santa Paula, 6-4, 6-1.
