Driver Is Declared Brain-Dead After Attack
A 23-year-old Pasadena man was declared brain dead Monday after he was shot as he drove along Arroyo Parkway near Old Pasadena, police said.
Detectives are investigating the shooting of Robert De La Riva as a murder. He was critically wounded by a passenger in another car at a traffic light on northbound Arroyo Parkway between California Boulevard and Cordova Street just after 3 a.m. Sunday, said Pasadena Police Cmdr. Mary Schander.
A passenger in De La Riva’s car, Rodrigo Uriate, 24, was shot in the hip and was treated and released from a hospital.
Several men were in the other vehicle and one of them fired several shots, police said. Arroyo Boulevard is a popular thoroughfare that connects the Pasadena Freeway to Old Pasadena.
Neither De La Riva nor Uriate are believed to be gang members, Schander said. Authorities said some words may have been exchanged between the victims and the shooter before the incident.
