California Amplifier Reports Sales Decline

For its first quarter ended May 31, California Amplifier Inc. in Camarillo reported a steep decline from a year earlier.

Net income for the quarter was $130,000 or 1 cent per share, compared with $1.62 million or 13 cents per share for the first quarter ended June 1, 1996. Sales for the most recent quarter were $12.01 million, compared to $17.27 million a year earlier.

“Delays by the domestic wireless cable television market in its transition to digital technology in many areas, and international delays for new system launches in certain markets were the primary reasons for the shortfall in sales for the first quarter,†said Ira Coron, chairman and CEO.

Despite the year-to-year comparison, the company’s sales and profit increased in the first quarter over the immediately preceding fourth quarter, Coron said. Sales in the first quarter increased to approximately $10.3 million from $8.8 million in the fourth quarter.

Coron said California Amplifier is focusing on the domestic roll-out of digital wireless cable by Pacific Telesis and Bell South. Latin America and certain regions in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe also remain strong for wireless cable television, he said.

California Amplifier designs and manufactures products for the reception of microwave signals used in the delivery of multichannel television.
