Padres Trade Valenzuela to Cardinals

In a swap of former All-Star left-handers, the San Diego Padres acquired Danny Jackson from St. Louis and sent Fernando Valenzuela to the Cardinals in a six-player trade Friday night.

The Padres also sent infielder Scott Livingstone and outfielder Phil Plantier to St. Louis, getting right-hander Rich Batchelor and first baseman-outfielder Mark Sweeney in exchange.

San Diego also received undisclosed cash considerations in the deal.

Jackson, a 35-year-old two-time All-Star, has spent the last three seasons in St. Louis. Bothered by a rib cage strain early this year, he is 1-2 with a 7.71 ERA in four starts.

Valenzuela, 36, is 2-8 with a 4.75 ERA. Valenzuela, the 1981 NL Cy Young and Rookie of the Year and a six-time All-Star, was scheduled to pitch Friday night’s interleague game against the Angels, but was replaced by Will Cunnane after the trade.

“We went to the bullpen to tell him he was not starting,” said Padre Manager Bruce Bochy. “We told him there’s a trade made, you’re involved. It wasn’t easy to look him in the face. He was shocked by it. He’s been around. He knows it’s part of the game.”

The Atlanta Braves signed their first-round pick in the amateur draft, agreeing to give an $825,000 bonus to Florida prep star Troy Cameron from St. Thomas Aquinas High in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The 18-year-old shortstop will report Monday to the Braves’ minor league team in Danville, Va.

Cameron, a switch-hitter, hit .475 with 14 homers and 36 RBIs as a senior.
