Mecir Lets Marlins Walk, 2-1

MIAMI — Jim Mecir walked Charles Johnson on a 3-and-2 pitch with the bases loaded and no outs in the 12th inning Friday night, and the Florida Marlins defeated the New York Yankees, 2-1, in the first extra-inning interleague game.

John Wehner led off the 12th with a single against Mecir (0-4). Bobby Bonilla then hit a grounder to Paul O’Neill, making a rare appearance at first base because of a late switch, and his throw to second for an attempted forceout was late.

Jeff Conine then bunted for a hit to load the basesand set the stage for Johnson.

The Marlins, who tied the game on Moises Alou’s run-scoring single with two out in the ninth off David Cone, won their third game in a row and ended New York’s winning streak at five games. It was the first interleague game for both teams.

The game drew a sellout crowd of 42,455, the largest of the season in Miami.

New York loaded the bases in the 12th on two walks and a single, but Tino Martinez grounded out against Dennis Cook (1-0).

Cone gave up only one hit through eight innings. Alou’s hit scored Kurt Abbott, who led off with a single and took second on a sacrifice.

Alou’s hit cost Cone his first shutout in three seasons. He struck out nine in nine innings and didn’t allow a runner to reach second until the ninth.

Rain delayed play for 49 minutes before the Marlins batted in the 10th inning.
