County to Consider Tank Cleanup Funds

County supervisors Tuesday will consider whether to accept state funds to continue cleaning up hazardous waste disposed of in underground tanks.

For the past nine years, the state has annually given Ventura County $573,480 for the tank cleanups. The county has cleaned 485 contaminated sites during that time, with 405 toxic sites remaining, officials said.

The cleanup was started in 1987 through a statewide project initiated by Gov. Pete Wilson. In 1990, the state decided to fund the program indefinitely.

Officials expect that the supervisors will accept funds from the State Water Resources Board for another year. The new agreement would provide funding through June 30, 1998, and cover all costs associated with the project.

“The dollar amount will not change from previous years and the need for the cleanups still exists, so I think it’s likely it will pass,” said Doug Beach, manager of Ventura County’s Hazardous Materials Program.
