Bridget Pearson’s victory in the girls’ pole vault in the state track and field championships at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento on Saturday gave Hoover High its region-leading 16th individual state title.
Other schools from the region that have won five or more titles are Glendale with 15, Rio Mesa with nine, Kennedy and Oxnard with eight, Thousand Oaks with seven and Antelope Valley and San Fernando with five.
When juniors Justin Fargas of Notre Dame High, Miguel Fletcher of Alemany and Demetrus Patterson of Birmingham placed first, second and tied for sixth in the boys’ 100 meters in the state championships on Saturday, it marked the first time since the meet began in 1915 that three sprinters from San Fernando Valley schools had placed among the top six finishers in the 100.
