Councilman Wants Public to Share Rebate
City Councilman John W. Hedges is proposing to share among residents a rebate that the city expects on its recycling bill.
Hedges proposed the idea last year, when he was mayor, but was overruled. This year, he’s trying again.
The city, he said this week, is expecting a large rebate from the state. And rather than see it spent on a new project, Hedges said, he would like to see every property owner in the city get a share.
“I want to return all or part of it,” he said.
City Manager Kevin J. Murphy has developed a list of other ways to use the funds, including hiring new employees at City Hall, and has presented it to the council.
As the council proceeds with budget negotiations this month, Hedges said, he will keep pushing for sharing the rebate.
