Three teachers in the Moorpark Unified School District were cited for their unwavering commitment to excellence as they earned Teacher of the Year awards from the Kiwanis Club of Moorpark.
Donna Fulgham, Beth Gutknecht and Rick Kent will receive their honors at the Moorpark school board’s June 17 meeting.
“As far as I’m concerned, 99% of the teachers are excellent,” said David Sakata, chairman of the Kiwanis award nomination committee. “But what distinguishes [award winners] from others is they go the extra country mile.”
Fulgham has been teaching advanced-placement English and English as a second language at Moorpark High School for six years, he said.
Gutknecht teaches ESL at Flory School, according to Sakata.
Kent has been a math teacher at Chaparral Middle School for 15 years.
The honorees will receive a plaque, a $100 cash award and will be lauded at an awards dinner this summer.
This marks the third consecutive year the awards have been given. Teachers can be nominated by parents, school staff or other teachers, Sakata said. Seven teachers were nominated this year.
