Council Seeks Help in Hiring City Manager

A divided Oxnard City Council has voted to hire a head-hunting firm to search for a new city manager.
The council voted 3 to 2 Tuesday to spend as much as $21,000 on an outside search for a replacement for ousted top administrator Tom Frutchey.
Councilmen Tom Holden and Dean Maulhardt voted against the proposal, preferring that the city choose from among in-house candidates who have expressed an interest in the job.
Those candidates include Interim City Manager Prisilla Hernandez, Police Chief Harold Hurtt and Community Services Director Matt Winegar.
The decision does not preclude consideration of present city employees for the post, officials said. But the council majority that fired Frutchey has repeatedly criticized key aspects of the city’s operation and management during his tenure.
A list of potential firms will be presented to the council next week.
