HONORS

Wes Hutchison of Burroughs High was named baseball player of the year in the Foothill League.

Hutchison, a senior pitcher, was 11-2 with a 1.46 earned-run average for the Indians. He batted .347 with five home runs, helping Burroughs win its first league title since 1957.

Brian Fatur of Calabasas High and Ryan Yoshiwara of Moorpark were named co-players of the year in the Frontier League.

Fatur, a senior center fielder, batted .529 and led the region with 38 stolen bases to help the Coyotes to their third consecutive league title.

Yoshiwara, a senior second baseman, batted .452 with 11 doubles for the second-place Musketeers.

Cal State Northridge senior Marquis Jones will compete in his final collegiate track and field

meet and will join freshmen Cheree Hicks and Christina Tolson in making their national-level debuts in the NCAA championships in Bloomington, Ind., today through Saturday.

Jones, who holds the school record in the men’s 110-meter high hurdles at 13.97 seconds, will run in a qualifying heat Thursday.

Hicks, a 1996 graduate of Littlerock High and the school-record holder in the women’s discus at 180-2, will compete in that event today and in the shotput Thursday.

Tolson will compete in the women’s hammer throw Saturday. Tolson holds the school record at 179-2.
