Ducks’ Ferreira Talks With Muckler

General Manager Jack Ferreira of the Mighty Ducks said he has contacted former Buffalo Sabres General Manager John Muckler about replacing Ron Wilson as coach.

Ferreira also has talked to former Phoenix coach Don Hay, former Chicago coach Darryl Sutter and Duck assistant Walt Kyle about the vacancy.

“I want to sit down now and decide whether I want to do second interviews or interview new candidates,” Ferreira said.

Muckler was fired by the Sabres after they lost to Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference semifinals last month. He was 125-109-34 in three seasons as coach before becoming general manager in 1995. He also coached Edmonton to a Stanley Cup victory in 1990.

Muckler and Coach Ted Nolan had a stormy two-season relationship in Buffalo, which prompted Muckler’s firing.

Wilson, whose contract was not renewed after four seasons as Duck coach, is weighing offers to coach the Phoenix Coyotes or Washington Capitals. Wilson, who led the Ducks to their first winning season and first playoff berth this season, was unavailable for comment.
