UC Irvine’s Yaba Wins 10,000 Meters

UC Irvine’s Jo-Jo Yaba won the 10,000 meters with a time of 36 minutes 5.05 seconds on the first day of the Big West Track Championships on Friday at UC Irvine. Teammate Skye Greene had the fastest qualifying times in the 100 hurdles (14.18) and the 400 hurdles (59.21).
Popi Edwards, also of UC Irvine, had the second-fastest qualifying time in the 100 meters (12.02) and 200 meters (24.50).
Long Beach State’s Jason Hinkin won the pole vault, clearing 18 feet 1/2 inch.
Utah State’s women, the four-time defending champions, had 35 points. Boise State was second with 33 and UC Santa Barbara third with 19. UCI, Idaho and Nevada were tied for fourth with 17 points.
Utah State’s men, the three-time defending champions, led with 58 points. Idaho was second at 56 and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo third with 50 1/2.
At the NAIA meet:
Orejel takes fifth--Isis Orejel of Southern California College finished fifth in the women’s 400 meters and teammate Brian Carlson also finished fifth in the men’s high jump at the NAIA track and field championships at Life University in Marietta, Ga.
