No. 1 Chaminade Takes Care of Atascadero

Chaminade High claimed its first baseball playoff victory since 1985 by defeating Atascadero, 4-2, on Friday in a Southern Section Division III first-round game at Chaminade.

Chris Gray (10-1) pitched a six-hitter for the top-seeded Eagles (25-2) and drove in two runs with a double and a single.

Catcher Ryan Hamill hit a home run in the third inning, his 15th of the season.

The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in The Times’ regional poll, will play Burroughs in Tuesday’s second round.

In other Division III first-round games:

Burroughs 5, Torrance 2--Wes Hutchinson earned his 11th victory, tops in the region, by allowing three hits in five innings for the Indians at Burroughs.

Gilberto Hernandez and Anthony Fabrizio each hit home runs for Burroughs (19-7). Juan Zavala and Danny Mariscal each added two hits.

Westlake 12, Moorpark 1--Scott Dragicevich was four for four with three doubles and two runs batted in for the Warriors (17-7-1) at Westlake.

Ryan Cope had two doubles for Westlake, which plays Redondo in the second round on Tuesday.

Justin Ames had a home run in the sixth inning for Moorpark (16-10).

DIVISION I

Royal 12, Palmdale 2--Brett Wayne had four hits and two RBIs, and Mike Rainer had three hits and two RBIs for the the Highlanders (17-8), who had 18 hits at Palmdale.

Matt Rainer (8-2) pitched five innings and allowed two runs on five hits for Royal, which will play Notre Dame in the second round.

Anaheim Servite 14, Highland 2--The Bulldogs (12-15) were held to one hit by the fourth-seeded Friars (24-3) at Servite.

DIVISION II

Hart 4, Righetti 2--Bobby Graves gave up two hits and struck out 13 in 5 2/3 innings of relief for the Indians at Hart.

Jeff Gaeta had two RBIs for Hart (19-8), which plays at Paso Robles in the second round Tuesday.

DIVISION IV

Calabasas 5, Fillmore 4--Marc Wilson scored the winning run from second base on a single by Matt Sagoian with two out in the seventh inning at Calabasas.

Josh Goldfield hit a two-run home run for third-seeded Calabasas (25-2), which committed five errors.

Alemany 9, Oak Park 3--Jason Westemeir had three hits, including a home run and a double, scored three runs and drove in three runs for Alemany at Oak Park.

DIVISION V

Kilpatrick 8, St. Bonaventure 4--George Covarrubias had three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Mustangs in a first-round game at East L.A. College.

Ronnie Martinez (10-1) pitched a strong 4 1/3 innings in relief for the Mustangs (18-3).

Drew Corona homered for the Seraphs (9-17).

L.A. Baptist 8, Crossroads 6--Tim Feirfeil retired the final batter on a groundout with runners at first and second at Crossroads to record his first save.

Mike Hayes had two two-run singles for L.A. Baptist (16-10).

Mary Star 10, Campbell Hall 8--Greg Kriegler had two hits and four RBIs for the Vikings at Mary Star.

DIVISION VI

L.A. Lutheran 16, Bethel Christian 0--Gilbert Sandoval and Brandon Loomis combined on a no-hitter at L.A. Lutheran.

Sandoval struck out 10 in five innings. Loomis had three strikeouts in two innings.

L.A. Lutheran (14-8) will face Viewpoint in the second round.

Viewpoint 18, Highland Hall 1--Sophomore John Kogel (5-2) pitched a four-hitter, striking out nine for the Patriots (16-5) at Calabasas High.
