Red Wings Dominate Avalanche
DETROIT — Mike Vernon recorded his fifth career playoff shutout and Igor Larionov and Kirk Maltby each scored two goals as Detroit stunned the Colorado Avalanche, 6-0, Thursday night to take a formidable 3-1 lead in the Western Conference finals.
Vyacheslav Kozlov and Sergei Fedorov also scored for the Red Wings, who are trying to end a 42-year Stanley Cup championship drought.
“I didn’t have many shots to stop and almost no real quality chances,†said Vernon, who made only 19 saves. “The guys had the puck up the other end almost all of the first two periods.â€
Detroit scored two goals--both by Larionov--in the first period, three in the second and one in the third.
Late in the game, there was a 20-minute delay when numerous fights broke out, including a shouting match between Colorado Coach Marc Crawford and Detroit Coach Scotty Bowman.
“Emotions got a little bit out of whack at that particular time, and you say some stupid things,†Crawford said. “You just get caught up in emotions of the moment.â€
