PTA Volunteer Tapped to Be School Trustee
FOUNTAIN VALLEY — The Fountain Valley school board on Thursday appointed Tony McCombs, a volunteer and active PTA member, to fill an upcoming vacancy on the board.
McCombs, 40, replaces Trustee Barbara A. Vogel, who is moving to Atlanta. There are 18 months left in the term.
“I see someone that’s very open and very fair,†Trustee Julie Hoxsie said of McCombs.
He moved to the city in 1986 and has four daughters, ages 14, 11, 9 and 8, at Fred Moiola Elementary School.
McCombs, who works as a county building inspector, is the Moiola PTA’s technology chairman and, as a volunteer, teaches children there how to operate audio and video equipment.
He is perhaps best known in the district for his role in the fight this year to keep Moiola a K-8 school when the district was considering changing it to K-5.
The board approved the appointment with a 3-1 vote, selecting McCombs over eight other candidates. Board President Larry R. Crandall dissented, because he favored another candidate, Mark Goldhamer. Vogel was not allowed to vote, under district guidelines.
