As far as professional golf goes in the Southland, well, let’s just say that Tiger Woods might have some trouble keeping up.
Five annual pro events, divided among the PGA, Senior PGA and LPGA tours, are on the local schedule this year and all seem healthy, even if a couple of them are changing their address in 1998.
The 1998 Nissan Open will be played at Valencia Country Club because of a scheduling conflict at Riviera, where the U.S. Senior Open is going to be played. The senior Open will give the area six pro tournaments next year.
Meanwhile, the Toshiba Senior Classic is moving from Newport Beach Country Club, although its site for 1998 has not been announced.
The Toshiba and the Ralphs Senior Classic at Wilshire Country Club are part of the Senior PGA Tour schedule, and the first-year Los Angeles Women’s Championship at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale and the established Nabisco Dinah Shore at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage are part of the LPGA Tour.
The five Southland area pro tournaments offered total prize money of almost $5 million in 1997.
