Long Beach State Staggers Into Tournament With Loss

Long Beach State continued its late-season slide Sunday, losing to visiting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 9-3, in a Big West Conference baseball game at Blair Field.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (36-19, 15-15) swept the three-game series from Long Beach State, which has lost four of five.
Scott Kidd had three hits and drove in three runs and Matt Priess, who graduated from Brea Olinda High, hit a home run and drove in two for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Jason Porto limited Long Beach to four hits and one run in seven innings to improve to 2-0. Iran Barrera (5-3) gave up nine hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings and took the loss.
Izzy Gonzalez had a triple and scored and Toby Sanchez had two hits, including a double and drove in a run for Long Beach, which clinched the Big West Conference Southern Division title last week.
Chuck Lopez also had two hits and drove in a run for Long Beach (34-22, 22-8), which plays UC Santa Barbara in the first round of the Big West Conference tournament Thursday at Blair Field. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo opens against Nevada.
