1 Engine Out, John Wayne Jet Lands at LAX

A United Airlines flight bound for San Francisco out of John Wayne Airport made an emergency landing Sunday after losing power in one of its two engines shortly after takeoff, officials said.

No one was injured, and the 188 passengers on the 757 were placed on other United flights to San Francisco, an airline spokesman said.

Flight 1578 was forced to land at Los Angeles International Airport shortly after departing Orange County at 11:30 a.m., according to John Wayne Airport spokeswoman Kathleen Campini Chambers.

“There was communication with the tower [in Costa Mesa] and the decision was made that the plane should land,” Chambers said.

United Airlines spokesman Richard Martin said it was unclear why the engine lost power, but “when you have one engine you have to land.”
