City OKs Cellular Network

A Northern California company has won permission to install a wireless communication network of cellular transmitters citywide.

The City Council this week agreed to allow Metricom Inc. of Los Gatos to install the shoebox-size radios on 16 city- and Southern California Edison-owned street lights.

Once the “Ricochet” radios are mounted, Metricom subscribers in the city will be able to go online with portable computers without having to hook into phone lines.

In exchange for use of the poles, Metricom will pay the city a franchise fee of 5% of its gross revenue generated in Los Alamitos. The company also will pay $60 a pole and will provide the city with two free modems and unlimited use of its services.
