This is Stephen Vincent Benet’s New England version of “Faust, With the Devil†(Walter Huston, as the wickedly gleeful Mr. Scratch, perhaps his greatest non--â€Sierra Madre†performance) battling oratorical genius Daniel Webster (Edward Arnold) for the soul of farmer James Craig (pictured with Jane Darwell). Benet co-wrote the script, and director William Dieterle--who had appeared in Murnau’s “Faustâ€--and cinematographer Joe August had a field day, bringing back all the shadowy delights of German Expressionism (Bravo Tuesday at 10 a.m.).
