Cape Town Seafront Gets Its Biggest Hotel
The waterfront of Cape Town, South Africa, is getting its biggest hotel, developed by Sun International, which built the Palace Hotel at the massive Sun City entertainment and casino resort outside Johannesburg.
The 330-room Table Bay Hotel is to open next Saturday in the restored Victoria and Alfred Waterfront area. It faces Table Mountain on one side and Robben Island--where President Nelson Mandela spent 18 years in prison--on the other. The island opened as a tourist site in January.
About 4,000 bottles of wine--mostly South African--will be stocked at the hotel, and there is a room dedicated to wine tastings. Guest rooms are done in marble and oak. Ethnic cuisines common in the area, including Indian, Malay and Cape Colored, will be featured in the Atlantic Grill restaurant.
Such luxury does not come cheap. Room rates start at about $280, through Aug. 31, then rise to $374. Reservations: (800) 990-8299.
