Hernandez, Harris to Fight in 10-Round Bout at Pond

Forum Boxing has announced its card for the April 7 show at the Pond. Junior lightweight Carlos “Famous†Hernandez (23-1-1) of Bellflower will fight Bernard Harris (10-0-1) of Detroit in the 10-round main event.

In two other 10-rounders, super flyweight Cecilio Espino of (33-5-1) of Orange will face Miguel Granados (17-5-1) of Mexico City and junior middleweight Victor Maciel (15-0) of Mexico will fight Keith Mullings (13-2) of Newark. The card begins at 7:15.

Four football players from Orange County have been selected to play in the California-Texas Shrine All-Star game July 19 at Cal State Fullerton.

Wide receiver Rod Perry (Mater Dei), quarterback Greg Cicero (Servite), running back Malaefou MacKenzie (Capistrano Valley) and defensive back Ife Ohalete (Los Alamitos) have made a commitment to play.

Steve Conti was hired to coach the girls’ volleyball team at Corona del Mar, Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick announced.

Previously, Conti, 30, coached the girls’ and boys’ varsity teams at Foothill for two years. Conti, who played at Estancia and Golden West College, replaces Brian Chartier, who held the position for two seasons.

The Nike Cup, a 16-team youth soccer tournament featuring under-14 teams from Southern and Northern California, will be held from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. today at Cal State Fullerton.

Some of the top teams include the Mission Viejo Pateadores, San Diego Surf, North Huntington Beach, San Diego Pegasus, Clovis Soccer Club and the Chico Blaze. The semifinals will be at 2:30 and the finals at 5:30. The top two teams will advance to the national Nike Cup in Beaverton, Ore. in May.

The Roberto Clemente All-Stars are looking for baseball players ages 13-19 interested in traveling to Puerto Rico for amateur competition June 26-July 5, Aug. 1-10 or Dec. 27-Jan. 5.
