Beard on U.S. Short Course Team
Olympic medalist Amanda Beard, who recently had surgery to remove a cyst from her right wrist, has been selected to the U.S. Short Course World Champion swimming team.
The 14-member team, which also includes Steve West of Huntington Beach and Chad Carvin of Laguna Hills, will compete April 17-21 in Gothenburg, Sweden, in the III FINA Short Course World Championships.
Beard, a sophomore at Irvine High, won silver medals in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke at the Atlanta Games last summer and holds the U.S. record in the 100 breaststroke.
“She’s been sick most of this year,†said Dave Salo, her coach with the Irvine Novaquatics club team. “But despite the injury and her illnesses, she’s still has been swimming pretty well.â€
At the Senior Nationals in Buffalo, N.Y., last month, Beard’s winning times in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke were not far off her personal bests.
