TODAY’S GAMES
No. 1 Kansas (34-1) vs. No. 4 Arizona (21-9)--It looks like a mismatch, what with the Jayhawks’ menacing front line going against the Wildcats’ smaller inside players. However, in struggling to defeat Arizona in last year’s West Regional semifinals, 83-80, Kansas’ Twin Silos Raef LaFrentz and Scot Pollard combined for eight points, LaFrentz scoring only one in 23 minutes. The Wildcats hope to catch the Jayhawks at a weak moment. Kansas guard Jacque Vaughn has been fighting fever and bronchitis all week, and shooter Jerod Haase missed practice time because of assorted injuries.

* No. 14 Tennessee Chattanooga (24-10) vs. No. 10 Providence (23-11)--The Mocs are this year’s NCAA darling--every tournament needs one--and only the second No. 14 to make the Sweet 16--Cleveland State did it in 1986. Tennessee Chattanooga can survive another round only by sticking with its patient, half-court offense directed by point guard Willie Young while hoping NBA prospect Johnny Taylor continues to play like one. Providence got a 39-point game from forward Austin Croshere in a first-round victory over Marquette and a 33-point effort from guard Derrick Brown in Sunday’s shocker against Duke, so you figure tonight God Shammgod will think it’s his turn.
